Robert Oatley Vineyards

Robert Oatley Vineyards was founded in 2006 by Robert ‘Bob’ Oatley, of Rosemount Estate and a true Australian wine pioneer. Led by Chris Hancock MW and Head Winemaker Larry Cherubino, Robert Oatley wines is located in Mudgee, New South Wales, three hours north-west of Sydney. The vineyards have good levels of rainfall and strong sunshine, with an elevation of 500m+ which makes the difference, resulting in a longer, cooler, ripening period. Oatley, who died aged 87 in 2016, always adopted the simple mantra that `all wines should be a darn good drink’. Truer words have never been spoken.

Western Australia

It's a bit of a misnomer labelling a wine region Western Australia, but 'Small Corner of South-West Western Australia' doesn't quite have the same ring to it. Western Australia is a vast state, the largest in Australia and bigger than Alaska and Texas combined. Most of it is empty, nearly all of it is barren, and there are parts of the state that have yet to be stepped on by human feet. The south-west coast, with its cool Indian and Southern Ocean breezes and adequate levels of rainfall, is in direct contrast to the rest of Western Australia and is the only place suitable for growing grapes. Margaret River is the most well-known of these and produces elegant, pure examples of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, which are much different in style from the bolder wines produced in the eastern states. Other regions include Great Southern, Geographe, and the emerging, continental Blackwood Valley. Soils are varied between the regions, and other planted varieties include Riesling, Semillon, Merlot, Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc.

Margaret River

First planted in the 1960s, the Margaret River region is the most well-known in Western Australia, and its maritime climate produces wines that are distinctly European, with a restrained, complex style quite different from much of the output in the eastern states. Because many people associate Western Australia with a dry, hot landscape, and rightly so, it can be easy to think of Margaret River in the same way, but the convergence of the Indian and Southern Oceans provides ample rainfall and cool breezes to offset the long hours of sunshine. As a result, the grapes are ripened slowly, producing pure flavours and decent quantities of natural acidity. Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot and Semillon are prominent, and the wines are highly prized for their sophisticated characteristics, lip-smacking acidity and premium quality. 270 kilometres and three hours' drive from Perth, the 150 wineries in Margaret River enjoy solid tourist trade and producers are justifiably proud of their region and its contribution.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the world`s most widely recognised red grape varieties. It is grown in almost every major wine producing country and its wines are typically full-bodied and characterised by their high tannin content which provides structure, while supporting the rich, dark fruit flavours. With dominant dark-fruit aromas of blackcurrants, styles from various regions may also have flavours of eucalyptus, mint and tobacco. Its high tannin and acidity makes for excellent ageing potential.
