Vincent Latour

The Latour-Labille family boast a long, rich history and have been making wine in Meursault since 1792. Vincent Latour took over the family Domaine in 1998 from his father Jean, and then when joined by his wife, Cécile, changed the name from Domaine Jean Latour et Labille, to Domaine Latour from the 2010 vintage. Since his arrival Vincent has implemented many changes, and in turn improvements, from the inclusion of whole cluster fermentation, adaptation of demi-muids and foudres, as well as longer élévage (12 months in old or large oak, followed by 4 to 6 months in stainless steel vats without any bâtonnage to avoid masking fruit).

Burgundy

The illustrious wine region of Burgundy, home of the world's greatest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, can be confusing for even experienced wine buffs. Spanning 26,000 hectares of vineyards and over 3,000 individual producers across nearly 100 different appellations, unlocking the mysteries of Burgundy for your drinking enjoyment can require a sense of adventure, but getting to know a few villages and their style is a good way to start the journey. Burgundy is broken into six distinct areas. Just south of Dijon, the Cote de Beaune and Cote de Nuits make up the larger Cote d'Or, considered the beating heart of Burgundian production and the focus of the fine wine world. Vineyards are divided into tiny parcels, and some growers may only own a row or less of vines in the most esteemed sites. Chablis, in the north, is famous for its crisp whites, while south of the Cote d'Or Cote Chalonnaise and Maconnais offer great value. Propping up the Burgundy map is the large region of Beaujolais, the place to uncover juicy, fruity, unoaked Gamay wines. Cote de Beaune

Named for the primary town in the area, Beaune, the Cote de Beaune is an important wine-producing area in Burgundy, France. As part of the larger Cote d'Or region, along with Cote de Nuits, the best wines of the Cote de Beaune are amongst the finest in the world, with prices to match. The Cotes d'Or escarpment is the region's spine, and the best vineyards lie on the slopes, with limestone-rich soils. Vineyard class and status is determined by the quality of these soils, based on over 100 years of classifications. The area has a continental climate, with warm days and very cool nights, and there is a danger of springtime frosts and hail damage - in 2013 70 percent of the crop was lost. Well known appellations in the Cote de Beaune include Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Volnay and Corton and there several Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards across the region. Outside of these smaller, premium growing areas, many vineyard sites have the regional Bourgogne appellation applied to them.

Cote de Beaune

Meursault

One of Burgundy's most famous communes, Meursault's reputation comes from the broad swathe of fine Premier Cru and village level wines produced from the 395 hectares of vineyards within its appellation boundary. Located near the middle of the Cote de Beaune, just north of Puligny-Montrachet, the best vineyards in Meursault are at an elevation of about 260 metres with exceptional free-draining clay-limestone soils. Chardonnay is the predominant grape in Meursault and wines are typically full, opulent and powerful. Flavours of toasty hazelnuts, almonds, butter, honey and citrus fruits and floral notes are also common. The soils and individual climats can have a great impact on the wines with leaner, flintier, wines coming from plots higher up the hillside, or with a greater ratio of limestone in the soils. Meursault wines are known to benefit from time ageing in bottle, developing finesse and structure.

From the lean, crisp wines of Chablis, to the exceptional dry Blancs de Blancs of Champagne and the buttery, rich, oaky wines of the warmer regions of California, Chardonnay wines exhibit a full spectrum of flavours and styles. As a fairly neutral grape, it is the land, soil, location, climate and winemaker that have the biggest impact on this famous grape.
