The estate was founded in 1891 by Scottish pioneer John Riddoch, planting vines in the surrounding area yet the modern day name originates from its purchase in 1953 by Samuel and David Wynn. Located in Australia`s most famous wine region; Coonawarra known for the red `terra rossa` (red earth), which has proved to be ideally suited for the production of world-class Cabernet Sauvignon.

For all its size this is no bulk region, with many of Australia's finest wines produced in the state and most of the scientific research and development facilities located in and around Adelaide, the state capital. Bordered by the Great Australian Bight to the south, production is limited to the south-east corner of the state - it is simply too hot further north to produce wine capable grapes. There is a vast range of soils and growing conditions, thanks to topography and climate changes, and the state is capable of producing a broad spectrum of wines. Full-blooded Shiraz, bone-dry cool-climate Riesling, deep-fruited Cabernet Sauvignon, lusty Grenache, and brisk, elegant Adelaide Hills Chardonnay are just the tip of the iceberg.

Just above the dusty hamlet of Penola lies a perfectly flat, thin strip of land 15 kilometres long and not much more than one and a half wide. Dig a foot or so beneath the crumbly red topsoil, and you reach pure, free draining limestone, and then six feet beyond that lies the water table. Better conditions for fruit growing would be hard to find anywhere. With the warm, dry summers tempered by the influence of the Southern Ocean 60 kilometres away, grapes have a chance to develop rich, full flavours as the mild maritime climate extends the ripening season. Cabernet Sauvignon is king and the full, opulent wines with firm integrated tannins region are some of Australia's best. Coonawarra grown Chardonnay, Riesling, Shiraz and Malbec also produce clean cool-climate wines with ripe fruit and good acidity.

It is grown in almost every major wine producing country and its wines are typically full-bodied and characterised by their high tannin content which provides structure, while supporting the rich, dark fruit flavours. With dominant dark-fruit aromas of blackcurrants, styles from various regions may also have flavours of eucalyptus, mint and tobacco. Its high tannin and acidity makes for excellent ageing potential.
