Pessac-Leognan & Graves

Pessac-Leognan & Graves

South of the city of Bordeaux, the region of Graves runs along the western bank of the Garonne River, through some of Bordeaux's most famous vineyards. The wines of Graves range from the esteemed red blends and powerful crisp whites of Pessac-Leognan to the unctuous celebrated sweet wines of Sauternes. The birthplace of Bordeaux's fine red wines, Graves comes with a reputation stretching back as far as the 13th century. The Graves AOC title can be used for both red and white wines while Graves Superieurs, Cerons, Barsac and Sauternes are all appellations that specialise in sweet wines. Defying its long history, Pessac-Leognan was only split out and given its individual appellation title in 1987, due to the consistently high quality of its wines. Its red wines, including those of first growth Chateau Haut-Brion, are some of the most highly prized in Bordeaux, while the white wines, made from Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon can be aged for many years and are complex, flavoursome and delicious.

  3. Rich, powerful red
Located in the heart of Pessac and surrounded by the well-known estates of Chateaux Carbonnieux and Smith Haut Lafitte, Le Thil Comte Clary benefits from the same expertise of the latter as it is also owned by Florence and Daniel Cathiard. An estate on the up and a little hidden gem.... Read more

  4. Rich, powerful red
Château Malartic-Lagravière is our hidden gem of Graves (Pessac-Léognan) where Jean-Jacques and Severine Bonnie tend to 47-hectares of vines on a fine gravel ridge and now almost encroached on by the suburban outgrowth of Léognan. Great value, mature Claret.... Read more

  6. Rich, powerful red
The 2019 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc has a perfumed bouquet with citrus lemon, red apples, yellow plum and jasmine bursting from the glass. The oak here is wonderfully assimilated. The palate is medium-bodied with a perfect bead of acidity. It is not the most complex white Smith Haut Lafitte that I have tasted, yet it is full of te... Read more

There is no denying that Château Smith Haut Lafitte is one of Pessac-Léognan`s finest estates, one that I often refer to as the Pichon Lalande of the appellation as it`s close to the First Growth quality of Château Haut Brion thanks to its impressive structure, elegance and purity... these same characteristics can be found in...
