Morgon
Morgon is the second largest of the Crus of Beaujolais, and probably the most distinctive regarding its soils and the wines generated from the Gamay grapes grown within. Located in the centre of the steep, hilly zone that the ten Beaujolais Crus call home, Morgon is situated in Mont du Puy, where the soil base of crumbly slate and schist adds a distinctive earthiness to the wines. The temperate continental climate and protection from the colder north-westerly winds by the group of hills to the west of Beaujolais allow an extended ripening period and the infertility of the soils leads to concentrated, rich fruit. Wines from Morgon tend to be deeper and denser than the wines from the other appellations of Beaujolais, and have an earthy, floral, cherry and blackberry character, alongside a juicy, fleshy texture not often found in Gamay wines. The best wines will develop rich, savoury characters after ageing.
