Gigondas

A village in the southern Rhone with its own appellation title, Gigondas is well known for the high quality Grenache-based red and rose wines it produces. Located in the centre of the southern Rhone region, Gigondas has a hot, dry climate, characterised by long sunshine hours and Mediterranean breezes. Night-time temperatures can be cool, which helps lengthen the grapes' ripening period, contributing flavour and natural acidity. The appellation lies on the slopes and base of the Dentelles de Montmirail foothills, and soils are limestone based on the slopes, and sandier at the foot of the hills. Production laws allow for up to 80 percent Grenache to be used in both the red and rose wines, with Syrah and Mourvedre typically making up the remainder. Gigondas wines are expressive, with intense, ripe red and purple fruit and a bold character. Often compared to the wines of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas wines tick the quality-value ratio box with ease.
