Toro

Located next to the white wine stronghold of Rueda, in the north-western Spanish province of Castilla y Leon, Toro produces robust red wines made predominantly from local variety Tinta del Toro. A clone of Tempranillo, the region's law dictates that all Toro wines must contain at least 75 percent Tinta del Toro, typically producing concentrated, powerful red wines. The region is located high on the Castilla y Leon plateau and relies on the Duero river for its water supply. Like the other regions in the area, Toro endures a strongly continental climate with harsh winters and long hot summers. The area has little rainfall and the sun-baked vines and producers work hard to keep alcohol levels in check. A real up and coming region, Toro has seen significant investment in recent times as producers from outside the region realise the potential of its wines.
