Aloxe-Corton
Aloxe-Corton
A small village, located at the northern end of the Cote de Beaune region of Burgundy, Aloxe-Corton is an appellation known for producing primarily Pinot Noir wines from some of the most densely planted vineyard plots in the area. Located close to the hill of Corton, the Cote de Beaune's only Grand Cru appellation devoted to red wines, Aloxe-Corton was created as an appellation in 1938. Following the classification of the vineyards in 1982, around 30 percent of the vineyards in Aloxe-Corton gained Premier Cru status. Flinty, limestone-rich red soils loaded with potassium and phosphorous drive vine growth. The deep soils of the appellation produce vigorous, full-bodied Pinot Noir, with a dark colour and striking red and black fruit characteristics. Left in the cellar for an optimal three to five years, the wines of Aloxe-Corton will develop savoury, earthy notes of mushroom with some hard spices, stewed fruits and leather. These are Burgundy red wines at the more powerful, robust end of the spectrum.
