Thanks to its vineyards having a touch more chalk than the other communes of the Cote de Nuits, the wines of Chambolle-Musigny are considered to be the most elegant and restrained wines from this part of Burgundy. With 150 hectares of grapes, all Pinot Noir, Chambolle-Musigny has two Grand Cru vineyards and 24 that have been granted Premier Cru status. The small village of 400 people sits on the upper slopes of the Cote d'Or escarpment at a height of around 300 metres, while the vineyards fan out below towards Vougeot and Morey-Saint-Denis. The limestone-clay soils are shallow in places, but fissures in the rock allow the vines to dig deep into the earth to look for nourishment.
Powerful yet refined, rich yet elegant, the Pinot Noir wines of Chambolle-Musigny are considered to be some of the best in the world. The violet and red fruit aromas are easily recognisable and a bold palate of raspberry, cherry and spice develops with age into something infinitely graceful, with complex notes of prune, stewed fruits, and truffle.
