Corton
Corton
The largest Grand Cru vineyard in Burgundy, Corton covers the slopes of the famous 'Hill of Corton' at the northern end of the Cote de Beaune. The 145-hectare vineyard is home to several famous sub-regions, including Perrieres and Clos du Roi for their red wines and Corton-Charlemagne for rich, flinty whites. Wines were first made on the hill as far back as Charlemagne – hence the name of the famous plot, and the emperor, who died in 814AD, is thought to have ordered white grape plantings on the west side of the hill so the wine wouldn't stain his beard. Today, wines from this famous appellation can command very high prices, and the red and white wines of Corton are some of the finest in the world.
