Saint-Veran
Saint-Veran
Overlapping the northern border of Beaujolais and split into two distinct sections by Pouilly-Fuisse, Saint-Veran is a unique appellation of the Maconnais region of Burgundy. Saint-Veran labels are exclusive for white wines made from Chardonnay, but some villages within the appellation may produce wines from two appellations. The village of Saint-Amour on the appellation's southern edge makes white wines labelled Saint-Veran, and red Gamay wines labelled Beaujolais Cru. The moderate continental climate, with long warm summers and cool nights, creates a long ripening season and develops deep flavours within the grapes. The free-draining limestone-clay soils so famous throughout Burgundy are also present in Saint-Veran and peach, pear, honeysuckle, spice and almond are the wines typical characteristics. Saint-Veran Chardonnay also develops a toasty, honeyed note after as it matures in the cellar.
