Gisborne

Gisborne is a small city located on the north-east coast of the North Island of New Zealand, facing the Pacific Ocean and about 130 kilometres north of Napier, in Hawkes Bay. Though not as well-known as some of the more publicised regions of New Zealand, Gisborne is the third-largest grape producing area by volume and the macro climate, long sunshine hours and moderate sea breezes which extend the growing season make it one of the most reliable places to grow grapes in New Zealand. As a result, much of the vineyard land has been taken up by large producers for bulk-wine, but individual boutique producers have been making a name for themselves of late, and the region holds much promise. Chardonnay holds the majority of plantings, but Chenin Blanc, Viognier and Gewurztraminer are all used to make notable varietal wines.
