Jumilla
Jumilla
A small region in eastern Spain near the Mediterranean coast, Jumilla has a reputation as the best quality wine region in the province of Murcia. The lime-soaked soils help combat the dry, arid climate by offering the vines some moisture retention and the locations of the vineyards plots on elevated plateaus offer some protection from the intense summer heat. Jumilla makes the majority of its wines from Monastrell, a variety popular in this corner of Spain, and the fruity, earthy characters of the wines can mature into complex, richly flavoured wines when aged, developing notes of coffee and spice. White wines make up the bulk of the remainder of production, typically from local favourites Pedro Ximenez, Malvasia and Airen.
