Kamptal
Kamptal
A small, acclaimed region of north-east Austria, Kamptal is known for producing exceptional wines from vineyards planted on slopes overlooking the river Kamp. Like much of eastern Austria, the climate is influenced by the cool forests to the west and warm plains to the east. Warm days and cold nights help ripen the grapes while retaining acidity – vital aspects of the production of the Kamptal's signature grapes, Gruner Veltliner and Riesling. At the lower, flatter end of the region, the clay based soils produce concentrated, richly flavoured expressions of Gruner Veltliner, which comes loaded with typical flinty spice and citrus flavour. Upstream the precipitously steep slopes are dedicated to Riesling, which grows well on the stony topsoil, and produces clean mineral wines with a full range of vibrant green fruit flavours and lip-smacking acidity.
