Germany's largest wine region, Pfalz is also modern and innovative, producing wines from a broad mix of grapes. Located north of Alsace in the rain-shadow of the Haardt mountains, Pfalz also shares its French neighbour's benevolent climate, and the low rainfall combined with long, warm days and cool nights are perfect for developing healthy, full flavoured grapes.
While Riesling is the most commonly planted variety, 60 percent of the plantings in Pfalz are a miscellaneous collection of grapes, including all the Pinots - Noir, Blanc and Gris - and other, more experimental varieties. Of these, Pfalz Pinot Noir is gaining increasing favour among international consumers. Riesling remains the signature variety, and the hallmarks of the best Pfalz Rieslings are the concentrated, fuller-flavoured wines that are more rounded and less nervy than their cousins from the Mosel.
