Rueda
Rueda
A couple of hours drive north-west of the bustling Spanish capital Madrid, the small, peaceful region of Rueda is located high on the Castilla y Leon plateau. It is best known for making full-bodied white wines from the Verdejo grape, which grows well in the harsh continental climate. The region lies south-west of the red wine mainstay of Ribera del Duero, and the two regions rely on the Duero river for their water supply. Growing white wines are challenging in such a hot climate, and the cool, refreshing nights on the plateau are vital to the grapes developing the flavour and acidity they need to make good quality white wines. At its best, Rueda's Verdejo wines are majestic, full-bodied wines with a defined citrus character and aromatic quality with lively acidity and great texture and length.
