25 kilometres north of the city of Bordeaux, Margaux is a world-renowned wine appellation, known for it's silky, fragrant blended red wines. It is the largest appellation within the Haut-Medoc and counts several villages within its boundaries, including Margaux itself. The best vineyards are located on well-drained slopes, and the soils are some of the lightest, most gravelly in the Medoc, which provide the wines with their typical refinement and smooth character.
The growing environment is scattered, and many of even the wealthiest chateaux have vineyards dispersed amongst those of their nearest competition. Wine is made to the individual styles of the estates and is less reliant on terroir. The Cabernet Sauvignon dominant wines are often austere in their youth, but eventually flourish into complex, sophisticated and sensual wines with time and the best Margaux wines can be very long-lived.
