Riverina
Riverina
The flat tablelands of the Riverina region, dusty, hot and barren for the most part, are home to vast swathes of vines most frequently used for producing inexpensive bulk table wines. But in a region as large as this - it's about the same size as Switzerland - there are pockets of high-quality, and the most well-known Riverina wine town is Griffith, home to De Bortoli and several other producers. Unctuous Botrytised Semillon is the order of the day here, with the famous 'noble rot' developing the sugars in the grapes just before harvest, thanks to the high humidity. De Bortoli's Noble One, first produced in the 1980s, is the best known of these rich dessert wines and is one of the world's most famous stickies.
