Saint-Estephe

Saint-Estephe

One of the more famous Bordeaux wine appellations, Saint-Estephe is part of the broader Medoc appellation on the Left Bank of the Gironde estuary. Separated from Pauillac to the south by a small stream, Saint-Estephe is known for its high-quality AOC wines, and also contains some classified growths, including Montrose, Cos d'Estournel and Calon-Segur. The most northerly of the major Medoc appellations, Saint-Estephe has less river based gravel in its soils and relies on heavier, clay-based soil for its grape production. As a result the appellation's grapes perform better in warmer, drier years as the clay's moisture-retaining properties help to sustain the vines. Typically the best wines of Saint-Estephe are deeply coloured, with rich, complex flavours and are very long-lived. At their best they can rival any wine from Bordeaux.

Chateau Tronquoy-Lalande is a well-situated vineyard on the gravel hilltops of St Estephe, overlooking the Gironde estuary. Owned by Chateau Montrose and located not too far away, it was bought by Olivier and Martin Bouygues a few months after they purchased the well-performing second growth. 4. Rich, powerful red
Located in the heart of St. Estèphe, we believe this is a hidden gem property with 51-hectares of vines spread across 63 plots right next door to Montrose... which it is often mistaken for in blind tastings! Despite not being classified, Jane Anson rightly points out `always one of the real value picks in St. Estèphe.`... Read more

  6. Ormes de Pez is a chateau with a big following and under the same ownership as Lynch-Bages. Bright nose with plenty of blackcurrant fruit and toasted oak. Plenty of vibrancy with pure cassis and cherry fruit with fine tannins. Hoped for a little more definition but well made. 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 49% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc... Read more

Nestled away between famous neighbours such as Calon Ségur and Montrose, we believe that under the ownership Philippe Van de Vyere, the future is an exciting one for Phélan Ségur in the more than capable hands of Véronique Dausse (Managing Director) and Michel Rolland (Consultant).... Read more
